Studies have shown that time spent on homework has
important and positive effects on achievement.
Homework can provide opportunities to practice, prepare for, or extend
learning. It also builds responsibility,
self confidence and time management.
McVey homework guidelines provide direction for students,
parents, and teachers, as follows:
**Role of Student
-
To record
homework assignments when they are given by the teacher.
-
To complete
homework and return it in on time.
-
To complete
homework as accurately and neatly as possible
-
To ask for
assistance from the teacher, if an assignment is not clear.
-
To ask for
guidance from the parent, if necessary
**Role of Parent
-
To provide a time
and place that is free from distractions, consistent with a child’s learning
style.
-
To be aware of
the teacher’s homework policy.
-
To communicate to
the teacher any circumstances that prevent completion
of homework.
-
To check with the
child, on a daily basis, as to what assignments have been given.
-
To avoid doing
homework for the child. Assistance,
checking and encouragement are appropriate interventions.
**Role of Teacher
-
To communicate to
students and parents the class policy for homework.
-
To check
homework.
-
To present homework
assignments in a clear manner.
-
To provide
appropriate consequences for lapses in completing homework assignments.
-
To provide for
appropriate recognition to students who do homework completely and timely.
-
To inform parents
about missing or incomplete homework in a timely manner.
Homework
assignments will be left to the discretion of the teacher.
