As school social worker at Bowling Green Elementary School I have designed program and counseling services to meet the specific needs of the student body and their families. In designing these services, I was assisted and advised by the school principal, the assistant principal, the coordinators of pupil personnel and psychological services for the East Meadow School District, as well as school social work colleagues within the district. Feedback regarding service needs was also provided by school staff and families of the Bowling Green Elementary School community.
Character Education was stressed as a primary need at Bowling Green Elementary School, and to that end, I have developed in-class presentation formats on the subjects of safety (grades K-2), conflict resolution, bullying and respect, substance abuse prevention (grade 5) and anger management. This office also offers group discussion and counseling formats for children on a variety of subjects. These subjects include socialization, conflict resolution, coping with family divorce and separation, grief issues and family addiction concerns. This office is also available for individual counseling and consultation with families as well as information and referral services for ongoing clinical counseling and /or direct service needs.
My professional commitment to the East Meadow School District, its children and families centers on a very distinct core belief. To the degree that children and their families are affected by conditions affecting the learning process, it is the responsibility of school-based social work personnel to offer guidance in helping these children and families to receive appropriate and timely assistance. In receiving this help, students are returned to a state of mind which allows them to focus on their work and to develop age appropriate learning, socialization and personal coping abilities.
