Barnum Woods Character Education continues to be infused within all areas of the curriculum.  The focus of the Character Education kick-off was initiated with the focus of the “Power of One.”  Students are recognizing the impact one student has on bullying situations they encounter; whether on the playground, cafeteria, or on the school bus.  Classrooms on each grade level are taking the “Power of One” oath, and promising to be the one to make a difference.  Students from each grade level are signing posters promising to practice good character, not contribute to bullying and report bullying when they see it.

PTA sponsored their annual October “Family Fun Nights.”  There were two nights of Halloween Costume Bingo for students in grades K-2 and 3-5. Family members were invited to spend time with their children playing Bingo, participating in Raffles, and winning various prizes. Many staff members appeared in costume assisting students on all grade levels.  These evenings offered students a safe and fun way to spend Halloween with their families.

Grade Four Quest participated in a living history experience at Blydenburgh Park.  Professional archaeologists worked with students as they explored the only authentic excavations and test pits that are available to all students on Long Island.  Artifacts are not “planted” in the test sites.  Students have actually uncovered various artifacts within the test pit areas.  This experience was an ideal, hands-on portal to initiate the beginning of conducting historical research projects.

Once again this year, Student Council members at Barnum Woods dedicated their efforts to raising money for the March of Dimes. The students decorated pumpkins and sold them for one dollar each, a project that the Barnum Woods student council has done for almost 20 years. So far this year, the students raised over $400, which will be donated to the March of Dimes to assist  in their efforts to prevent premature birth and provide opportunities for  further research  the problems that threaten the health of babies..
